THE PAFURI TRAVERSE
In the far north of the Kruger National Park, WildSide Trails and RETURN Africa have come together around a shared belief: that wilderness should be walked. That the wild is something to move through, not observe from a distance.WildSide brings a philosophy of self-supported, immersive multi-day journeys on foot, carrying what you need, sleeping under open skies, and reconnecting with a simpler rhythm. RETURN Africa brings custodianship of place—access to the Pafuri region, deep conservation roots, and a long-standing partnership with the Makuleke community.Together, this creates something rare. The Pafuri Traverse is the result, a multi-day walking experience through one of Kruger’s most diverse and remote landscapes. It is guided, but self-reliant. Simple, but demanding. And intentionally removed from the distractions of modern travel. More than a trail, this partnership is about purpose. It’s about protecting wild spaces by experiencing them differently. Ensuring that access remains meaningful, low-impact, and connected to the people and land that sustain it.This is not a traditional safari. It is a return—to simplicity, perspective, and the wild.

Camp Out Under The StarsThe Pafuri Traverse is not a trail in the traditional sense. It’s a six-day, five-night journey on foot through one of the most remote and biologically rich corners of the Kruger National Park, where the Luvuvhu and Limpopo Rivers shape a landscape that feels both ancient and untouched.
The experience begins at RETURN Africa, where the group meets at 11am on Day 1. There’s time to prepare, pack, and settle into the rhythm before stepping out to walk at around 1pm. From there, the outside world falls away quickly. Over the next five nights, the wilderness becomes home. This is a fully self-supported backpacking trail.
You carry what you need, walk 10–15km a day, and sleep wherever the day ends. There are no fixed camps and no unnecessary comforts—just small fires, simple meals, and a commitment to leaving no trace of your presence. Each day follows a natural rhythm. Early starts, moving through the cool hours of the morning while the bush is most alive. Long, unhurried lunch stops in the shade of large trees. Then a slower afternoon walk into camp, where the focus shifts to rest, reflection, and the quiet routines of living simply in the wild.
The terrain is varied and at times demanding—particularly on the first day, where the trail climbs into rugged sandstone hills. A good level of fitness and a willingness to be uncomfortable are essential. But in return, you gain something deeper: a genuine connection to the landscape.Wildlife is part of the experience, not the objective. This is Big 5 country, and moving through it on foot requires awareness, respect, and trust in your guides. Every track, sound, and encounter becomes part of the journey.
On the final morning, Day 6, the group is collected at 9am, returning to camp by 10am to allow time for onward travel. The transition back to the modern world is quick—but what you carry with you is not.At its core, the Pafuri Traverse is about stripping things back. It’s about simplicity, self-reliance, and perspective. A few days of carrying your world on your back has a way of changing how you see it.
Nothing can quite prepare one for an experience like this.
If you’re ready to become conscious of your purpose in life and to allow yourself the opportunity to be part of nature and its way of life, then this is a good starting point - Vicky Alison
